Do Children and Chores Mix?

We all struggle, at times, with various parenting questions. I am often asked questions by parents that I’m sure others have as well, so with that in mind, we have decided to initiate a School Age Parenting blog. As an educator I know what the text book answers are, as a parent I know that real life does not always fall in line with text book answers! Our goal is to share as a community and reflect on a variety of practices to become stronger and wiser parents!

Last week I had a couple of parents ask me about children and chores. At what age should they begin having jobs and responsibilities at home?  In the education world, researchers would say starting in pre-school, children should be responsible for simple tasks that help contribute to the family as a whole. As a mom, I understand that in the real world it is easier to “just do it myself”. We also have specific ways of doing things and children are often unable to complete the task as we would like.  Then I read this article , while I agree it is not the highest quality literature or research based, it does make some very good points. Are we doing a disservice to our children by doing everything for them? Read it and email me back to let me know what you think? I will share your comments, typical jobs & ages with other JCC families.

Sharing in the adventures of parenting,
Lisa
