“Before The Scenes” A look at this weekend’s STARZ Production
by Rachel Rustin – The Producer as well as two of our actors Claire and Gina DiMaio
The last time I appeared on stage was in my third grade class’s production of The Ugly Duckling. Luckily, there are plenty of kids who find being on stage more to their liking and many of them find their way to JCC youth theatre programs. My job as the producer is to handle logistics. During Tech Week (the week leading up to the performance), there are a lot of logistics.
Each actor needs a costume; they need to know where their props go; their parents have to bring them at the right time each day; tickets must be sold; sets must be built; staff must be on the same page; parents must be kept up-to-date. Since STARZ is a youth theatre program, in addition to putting on a show, we also are teaching about how to put on a show, how to overcome stage fright, and how to remember all those lines!
The actor’s experience, of course, is completely different from mine, as Claire and Gina DiMaio will tell you:
“STARZ is a theatre program for kids in grades 5-12. It is a wonderful opportunity for any aspiring young thespian to get their start on the stage.
We have been part of the JCC's theatre programs for seven years, and have gained so much more knowledge of the performing arts than we ever thought we would. As we have been in STARZ, we have met with so many people who are just as motivated and enthusiastic about musical theatre as we are.
STARZ is currently rehearsing for this weekend’s production: Mulan, the story of a Chinese girl who disguises as a man and fights in the emperor's army to restore honor to her family. It has something for everyone - humor, romance, action and favorite songs and scenes from the Disney film, as well as introduces new songs that are sure to please!"
Performances will be held in the Sheldon Vexler Theater on Saturday, Mar. 23, at 7pm, and Sunday, March 24, and 2pm and 4:30pm. Tickets are available at the door for $7. For more information about STARZ, please contact Rachel at (210) 302-6969.
