As a nice Jewish girl living in Texas for the last 27 years, I often wonder - which came first, Migas or Matzo Brie? (Matzo Brie = scrambled eggs with matzo mixed in.) If I were to venture a guess, I would put my gelt (Yiddish for money) on Matzo Brie based on the old adage “Necessity is the mother of invention.”
March 26-April 2 marks the observance of the Jewish holiday of Passover commemorating the Israelites Exodus from Egypt. Because there was no time to let their bread rise before departing for the land of Israel, during Passover, Jewish law forbids eating foods that can contain leaven (an agent, such as yeast, that causes batter or dough to rise). Therefore, a major part of Passover consists of removing all traces of leavened foods from the home and replacing them with unleavened foods – like Matzo.
While eight days doesn't seem like a long time, one’s perception changes once you've been “commanded” to narrow your carb choices to eating solely matzo for that span of time. So, imaginative Jews alike find themselves looking for unique ways to enjoy the holiday with creative ways to prepare and eat matzo.
The Jewish Magazine provides their version of the history of Matzo Brie as well as several recipe options. As you can see in this article, Matzo Brie has many forms -- some like it crumbled while others prefer it chunky. Some eat it with honey or cinnamon & sugar, while others (like me) prefer salty with a dollop of sour cream. And then there's the apple sauce folk - probably the same people who enjoy applesauce on their Chanukah latkes.
The eight days of Passover offer Jews around the world with the opportunity to be creative when it comes to meal planning. From Passover pizza to flourless cakes, there are many sites that offer a variety of options for delicious Passover friendly meals, recipes and snacks during this historic holiday.
