I Play a Plant on Stage at The Vex!

Written Three weeks out from the start of the production...

When I first got word that the Vex was doing "Little Shop", I knew I wanted to be involved in any way that I could. When they announced the concept of playing the plant as a woman, I was even more intent on being a part of the show.

I am extraordinarily fortunate to have been cast as a part of the plant with two other incredible actresses.  It's been a very exciting, and sometimes daunting, process!  Of course, there's the obvious obstacle of translating a traditionally male role into female, both with characterization and with vocals. But the biggest challenge we've had is melding three women into one plant. We've been playing with how to say the lines, and how the songs are going to work. This being unchartered territory, rehearsals have consisted of mostly trial and error, which is a lot of fun. Most actors don't have this kind of unique opportunity to rediscover a character like this.

The biggest issue I've had myself is dealing with the physicality of the part. Since we've done away with the traditional puppet, there's considerably more focus on our movement and nonverbal reactions. Learning how to move as a plant has been a really interesting process, especially since the voice of the plant is so distinctly human. The juxtaposition of the movement and the voice has been stretching me (no pun intended) in ways I didn't expect. It's different, challenging and extraordinarily fulfilling.

The pieces are falling into place. We're told we'll have costumes workable within the next several days. As I see the three of us syncing up and becoming more and more a part of something bigger, I am reminded of why the theatrical has always been the most alluring of art forms to me: collaboration. We couldn't do this without each other. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
