Steel MagnoliasThe Vex’s 19th season will close with Robert Harling’s comedic drama, Steel Magnolias, on stage May 12 through June 10. Tickets are now on sale.

2018 marks the thirty-first anniversary of Steel Magnolias. The play – which is based on some of the women in Harling’s life, including his sister who died due to complications from diabetes, and his mother, as well as their gaggle of friends – ran for three years at the Lucille Lortel Theater, an off-Broadway theater in Manhattan. As noted in a 2017 article about the play in the magazine “Garden & Gun”, Steel Magnolias was written “as a tribute to the strength” of these women. Having been written in just ten days, it was also a way for Harling, who admittedly was not a writer, to process his sister’s death.

While the film version of the play has a number of male figures who appear on screen and have dialogue, the play version is only women. Harling states this was because, when he was growing up, “the mystique of the beauty parlor [which is where the play takes place] was that guys were never allowed. You didn’t know what went on in there, and they all came back different somehow.”

When Steel Magnolias first opened off-Broadway, the cast was not prepared for the audience reactions they received. They’d been rehearsing the show entirely as a drama, but suddenly there were people laughing at some of the one-liners, things that were said matter-of-factly. Hence the play being referred to as a “comedic drama”.

Steel Magnolias has been produced all over the world, and became a blockbuster hit in the late 80s. It made its Broadway debut in 2005, where it ran for 136 performances. Lifetime released a remake of the film in 2012.

The production, opening next month at The Vex, will be directed by Mark McCarver who last directed the comedy Bad Jews. The all-female cast includes Tami Kai as M’Lynn, Elise Lopez as Truvy, Randee Lutterloh as Shelby, Whitney Marlett as Clairee, Kaitlin Muse as Annelle, and Sherrie Shirky as Ouiser. Beginning Thurs., April 12, tickets may be purchased online, or by calling 210-302-6835. Performances are Thursdays at 7:30pm, Saturdays at 8pm, and Sundays at 2:30pm, May 12 through June 10. There are no performances Saturday, May 19 or Sunday, May 20.
