Business Spotlight - Johnnie Chuoke's Home and Hardware

First of all let me say how honored I am be a JCC MVP spotlighted in the Center Peace!  I am Trudy Chuoke, the manager of Johnnie Chuoke’s Home and Hardware, and I keep pretty busy being so!  I write a weekly article for the Houston Chronicle, I worked on a book titled “The Best of Johnnie Chuoke”, and I have a weekly radio show, “The Happy Handyman”, where I talk about cleaning products, home maintenance and repair and answer listener questions.  It’s a wonderful job, but I didn’t intend to do this.  Nope, not at all.  Let me tell you a little story.

I started working for my dad when I was 25 years old.  At the time I was a teacher earning $600 a month when my dad asked me if I would like to work with him.  Like in “The Godfather” movie, he made me an offer I just couldn’t refuse.  That started my career at Acme Lumber and Supply Co., Inc.   I accompanied Dad to four hardware shows a year, joined him on his radio show, and had the opportunity to work beside some amazing people that became family to me.  I had my life all planned out.  But out of the blue, towards the end of 2007, I was diagnosed with cancer.  We closed the stores, and my mom and dad were supposed to retire.   And me, I was hoping to go back to teaching in the classroom.  But it just didn’t happen that way.  Midway through my cancer treatments, my diagnosis looked promising. At the same time, my parents, who were both 78 years old, became restless.  Dad asked me, if he bought a store, would I run it for him?  “You can run it anyway you want, just let me come and play.”  I wasn’t sure as by then it was a different landscape out there with large chains such as Home Depot and Lowe’s. I told my dad, “Thanks, but no thank you.”  A few days later, he asked me again and my answer was still the same. Then a week later, he asked me to meet him for coffee.  He told me about a store, how together we could run it wonderfully and I watched him become so excited. Then he said, “I bought the store already but I can’t run it without you, so are you in or are you out?”  You know my answer.  I was in!

I am so glad I said “yes”!  I meet some of the nicest customers each day.   Customers like you fill my day with questions that I enjoy researching. Tips and knowledge that you then share with your neighbors.  The other day, a customer visited the store and asked me about ants.  She has a contract with a pest control service who visits her home every other month, yet she reported she notices ants and roaches between the service calls.  I showed her a product called Clobber.  It’s a unique product in that it is a perimeter spray and also a knock down spray, unusual to find in one product!  It is water-based so there is no odor or staining.  Clobber dries in twenty minutes and once dry it is safe around pets and small children.

To use Clobber, spray around the baseboards in your home, under the sinks, in the pantry, and around doors and windows.  You are essentially making a protective barrier around your home.  And then if something crawls across that line, they are dead.  Clobber is effective in eliminating ants, roaches, scorpions, and silverfish. In addition, mosquitoes, gnats, flies, and moths can be eliminated by spraying in the room and closing doors and windows.  Clobber is safe, versatile, and made right here in Texas, by Texans.

If you have a questions about any DIY project or products, email me.  Or come by the store, I would love to meet you.
