A Message From the President/CEO Saul F. Levenshus

By Saul F. Levenshus, President/CEO

Welcome to the April Center Peace and our full array of new and returning JCC activities designed to serve both our JCC members and the general public. As evidenced by the special centerfold section between pages 10 & 11, this month’s issue of the Center Peace further reinforces one of our long standing tag lines…Community is our middle name. We are proud to acknowledge that 2019 represents 20 years that the JCC has been at the Campus along with our community partners the Jewish Federation and Jewish Family Service.

The Jewish Federation (JFSA) has always been at the center of every effort to strengthen our community. They led the charge when we brought our Jewish Agencies together to form the Campus in 1999, and as demonstrated by the display in this special section on the Life & Legacy initiative, I am so pleased that JFSA invited the JCC to be a part of this latest endeavor together with 10 other Jewish Community partners. Through the generosity and efforts of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation and the Jewish Federation, the Life & Legacy initiative is designed to build a lasting endowment to ensure a stronger San Antonio and to help preserve our Jewish future.

This special centerfold section also highlights the work that Jewish Family Service (JFS) does to serve the community through affordable mental health counseling, case management, advocacy, senior services, and victims of crime. In addition, you will note that Hebrew Free Loan Association of San Antonio (HFLA-SA) will be hosting their annual Community Picnic on Sunday, May 5 from 12:30-4pm at Eisenhower Park. Tickets are now on sale so check out their ad.

Of course, April also brings more outdoor activities back into play and the warmer weather means the JCC pool and tennis courts will see more activity along with our Youth Soccer Academy program which will be in full swing with hundreds of children and their families participating on the ball fields throughout the weeks and especially on Sundays. This year’s Texas Senior Games are already under way and run through April 11, with nearly 2000 adults, ages 50 years and better, competing in or volunteering at 25 different competitive sports at some of our community’s top sports and recreation venues, all with a shared goal to encourage everyone to live stronger, healthier, better.

And, on Friday, May 3, the JCC’s Annual Fore the Kids Golf Classic will be held at the SilverHorn Golf Club with a 1pm Shotgun tee time. For more information or to sign up, visit, while spaces remain. We hope to see you there.

While it’s hard to believe, summer is approaching quickly which means J Camp registration is in full swing featuring over 50 different Camp options for families to select from.  Camps begin in early June and run through mid-August providing opportunities for families all summer long. For more information about any of these programs see page 15 & 16, or visit our website at  Registration is open to the community beginning April 1. GAME ON!!

Our Annual First Night Seder is scheduled for Friday April 19 at 6:30pm, and will once again feature a traditional Passover meal and a participatory Seder led by Hazzan David Silverstein. We expect a full house once again, so don’t wait too long to reserve your space.

And lest we forget, the Vexler Theatre production of the highly acclaimed musical, “Cabaret” opens next month with tickets officially on sale beginning Thursday, April 4. Our last show sold out, so get your tickets while they’re available.

Yes, there are lots of activities to choose from this spring courtesy of the JCC and your community agencies. So, come on out and join us. We’re glad you belong here!
