MVP Spotlight - Texas Actors Workshop

Published Saturday, June 1, 2019

Are you or a family member interested in the fun and exciting world of Film or TV acting? Look no further than the JCC where we hold our nationally-respected film acting workshop!

Texas Actors Workshop, which holds weekly classes right here at the J, is considered one of the best boutique film acting workshops in the U.S. by talent industry professionals. Classes are held Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays for actors ages 4 and up; beginners of all ages and acting levels are welcome! We're proud to offer quality film acting instruction, and responsible career advice and referrals.

Actors are taught a skill set for film acting in a fun, positive, and supportive environment. Texas Actors has built our curriculum upon knowledge rooted in the talent business, directly from specific discussions and long-term relationships with industry professionals.

Our actors have had opportunities for tremendous experiences locally, including as role players in the San Antonio Police Department's Crisis Intervention Training. Some of these actors have later been referred to the U.T. Health Science Center to be role players with actual medical students. Many of our actors have also enjoyed the special opportunity to work with Spurs Sports & Entertainment, which handles most of the commercials, in-game and online videos, as well as voice-overs, and special events for the San Antonio Spurs, S.A. Rampage , FC San Antonio , Austin Spurs, and the Silver & Black Give Back Foundation. Altogether, our actors have worked on more than 50 productions for Spurs Sports & Entertainment.

We also have several actors who have worked with two very accomplished youth film programs. In 2014, we began working with the film program at the North East School of the Arts (NESA), ranked in the top ten Magnet Arts High Schools in the U.S., and since 2015, we have provided several actors for projects produced by the film program at the non-profit arts organization SAY Sí. Our actors have been in more than 50 indie film projects between these two exceptional programs. All current Texas Actors Workshop students will be allowed to audition for/participate in these programs as these partners make them available to us. These San Antonio partnerships have provided several valuable résumé building opportunities for actors who are career-minded.

Our actors and alumni have booked film and TV shows, and national and regional commercials. Most recently, Kaleb King was on The Rookie on ABC, while Patrick Duvall and Mallory Snow were on episodes of the REELZ Channel’s popular show Murder Made Me Famous. Bella Gorena was in a regional spot for Academy Sports + Outdoors, while Jalitza Delgado booked a national ad for Pizza Hut. Other credits include:  Law & Order; Ghost Adventures; Sofia the First; Best Friends Whenever; Over the Hedge; Men, Women & Children; Benjamin Button; Just Jordan; Noah; Alita: Battle Angel; Grindhouse; The Voice; 11.22.63; Dora & Friends; Killing Reagan, plus commercials for Baskin-Robbins, Old Navy, Bank of America, Spurs, MTV, Rampage, Jimmy John’s, WNBA, Chuck E. Cheese, Ancira, EA Sports, Squid Soap, Alamo Bowl, and others.

We've helped more than 200 of our students find quality representation with reputable, well-respected talent agencies, including some in Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Austin, Atlanta, and New York City. We’ve also hosted special events, workshops, and showcases with select casting directors and talent agents. Participation in these occasional events is purely optional, but we want to help those students seeking a talent agent to find quality, ethical representation.

As you might be aware, scam artists often prey upon unsuspecting actors and their families, promising almost instant fame, but at a very high cost financially. Texas Actors provides a responsible, credible alternative. We have been vetted by both NEISD and NISD, and our actor-friendly pricing schedule creates superior long-term value for actors. We also offer discounts for JCC members, referrals, and members of the military. You will not be asked to sign a contract or provide credit card or banking info, tactics often used by some companies to charge actors or their parents extra fees. We also provide a free annual seminar about how the talent industry really works to debunk myths and lies used to exploit actors and their families.

For parents, please note that unlike other acting programs, you’re always welcome (but not required) to sit in your child’s class as often as you would like. In addition, Texas Actors employs a ‘No Meanness’ rule in our classes. We have found this has benefited all of our students, especially those who may be a little shy or introverted, allowing them a safe space to blossom and flourish.

We're elated to hold classes here at the JCC, a spectacular patron of the arts, and we're glad to be a part of that equation. We've had the wonderful opportunity to work with JCC members, and have also been able to introduce non-members to the wonderful variety of programs and activities available at the J.
